Grocery Prices in Bulgaria: Kaufland Stores and Daily Expenses

Kaufland Bulgaria Kaufland is a German supermarket chain with over 1,300 branches in eight European countries. Each Kaufland store welcomes customers with a large parking lot, sometimes consisting of two parts, one open and one covered. The parking lot offers free charging stations for electric vehicles.

There's a fast food stand outside the Kaufland Bulgaria store entrance, and depending on the store, there are also small cafes inside where you can grab a quick snack.

History of Kaufland

The first Kaufland hypermarket opened in 1984. In 1990, the first Kaufland department store with tents opened in East Germany. Due to the intense demand, the building was delayed to save time. Three years later, 100 stores had opened.

Kaufland in Bulgaria

The Kaufland chain has been operating in Bulgaria since 2006. Let me say right away that the store is very large.

So, let's get acquainted with the range and food prices Let's start with the bread department.

Dobrudzha whole grain toasted bread is sold in 350 gram packages. The price is 0.56 euro cents. Wheat toasted bread also comes in 350 gram packages. 

Whole grain toast bread “K-Classic” from the Kaufland chain is sold in 550 gram packaging. 

Regular white bread is 500 grams. Nutripan bread costs 1 euro 10 cents for 370 grams. And there's the Silhouette series bread with various natural additives. Next to the bread shelves are display cases with cakes and pastries. Here's a 900-gram cake. And next to it is the fresh baked goods section. Freshly baked croissants are 50 cents each.

Kaufland stores have a wide variety of teas. A pack of 20 Ahmad tea bags costs €2.24. They also have locally produced teas, but these are only herbal teas. We go to the coffee shelves. This is a 200-gram Nescafe Gold. Nescafe Classic in a 250-gram can. And here's 200-gram Tchibo instant coffee. But honestly, we never buy it at that price because various stores periodically run promotions, and then it costs around €3.50. For example, here's the discounted coffee 40%. This happens with many other products. And this is a promotional set from Nescafe—28 3-in-1 tea bags and a mug.

Meat and sausage rows. 

Chilled chicken costs 4 euros 60 cents.

Dry sausage at Kaufland Bulgaria costs 2 euros 75 cents. A larger package is available – 800 grams. The "Orekhite" brand sausage, produced in Bulgaria, is at the higher end of the price range. Kaufland also has a fresh fish section. 

Dairy products

Private label milk, 1.5% fat content, 1-liter packaging. Milk with 3.7% fat content is also available in a liter bottle. Goat and sheep milk are also available.

Butter selection. We typically sell 82% butter in 250-gram packages from Bulgaria, but we also have some made in Germany. We also sell 125-gram butter from Italy. We also sell 82% butter from the Bulgarian manufacturer Vereya in 250-gram packages. 

We've become accustomed to buying butter and other products at discounts, fortunately, they're always available in stores. If one store isn't currently offering a discount, another will definitely have one, and the price of discounted butter is around 1 euro 40 cents per 250-gram pack.

Sour cream with 20% fat content, Bulgarian production. Danone sour cream is also available.

Popular English Cheddar cheese in a 200-gram package. Sliced Edam cheese in a 300-gram package. Sliced Gouda cheese in a 150-gram package. Bulgarian cheese in a 400-gram package. More Bulgarian cheese. Processed cheese under our own brand, 100 grams.

Mayonnaise, 1 liter bottle. Condensed milk with cocoa. Condensed milk made from vegetable fats, so it's not really milk anymore. And classic condensed milk. 

Eggs and pasta

Chicken eggs are usually sold in 10-egg packs (M size). Six-egg packs are also available. 

Spaghetti 500 grams. Vermicelli and pasta from Deroni 400 grams. Here's also Bulgarian pasta 400 grams. I'd like to point out that even the lowest-priced pasta in Bulgaria is of acceptable quality.

We couldn't find buckwheat in Kaufland today. It's rare in Bulgaria, as it's not in demand among locals. Lentils are popular here. A medium-sized rice weighs 1 kilogram.

Nesquik morning breakfasts are available for sale in economy 625 gram packaging.

The Kaufland store offers seasonal industrial products such as winter tires.

Fruits and Vegetables

Lemons in Kaufland, Bulgaria, are priced at 1 euro per kilogram. Apples start at 0.51 cents per kilogram. Potatoes are 0.40 cents per kilogram.

At Kaufland, customers must weigh fresh fruits and vegetables themselves and label them with the weight and price. There are no scales for weighed items at the checkout.

Chocolate and cookies

A bar of Bulgarian chocolate costs 45 cents. And this chocolate comes in 100-gram bars. Toblerone chocolate is 100 grams. German Schogetten chocolate. Also German Ritter Sport chocolate.

Cadbury chocolate 130 grams. Milka chocolate 300 grams in assorted sizes.

A 200-gram bar of German-made chocolate costs 1 euro 78 cents. And this 100-gram bar of chocolate starts at 40 cents.

In the run-up to Christmas and New Year, they've brought in some Christmas-themed products. A 60-gram Uncle Koleda (Santa Claus) candy costs 69 cents. A large box of Ferrero Rocher chocolates, 525 grams. A 150-gram box of Raffaello chocolates costs 3 euros. Kinder eggs come in various sizes and types. Kaufland has a good selection of candy bars and cookies.

And what's great is that at Kaufland, as at other stores in Bulgaria, discounts aren't directly tied to product expiration dates. Expired products are destroyed. This makes these stores very popular with customers, and the chain is growing.
